-dino mania-

my fondness of all things dino can be traced back to a blue peter programme in 1983. william walker had discovered a foot long claw belonging to a previously unidentified species of dinosaur. now, it is a well known fact that dorset and isle of wight are the places to go to if you want fossils, but william walker had found the claw in a brick pit in the commuter belt of london. baryonyx walkeri was the talk of town, especially surrey where it was discovered, and people suddenly came to understand that weald clay does not mean the muddy stuff stuck on your boots after a walk in sussex.

this 2 tonne 12 meter theropod started my fascination with dinosaurs. i have read books on the basis that it featured a dinosaur on the book cover - from the classic ' the lost world' and the terrifying saurian battle scene in 'journey to the centre of the earth', 'jurassic park' to the collection of essays 'dinosaur in a haystack' and most recently deborah cadbury's 'the dinosaur hunters'.

how much more exciting it is to think of dinos tearing down the square mile than to stare at pigeons - the ichthyosaurus swimming in the thames, the pterodactlyus nesting on top of st paul's cathedral, while a herd of iguanodon munch away on the leaves of the trees near finsbury square.......
