I am definitely a lesser mortal. I went to the anti-war march during the weekend with friends with the full intention of aiding the cause, but all I ended up doing was cheering on LSE (alumni connection, so important, you know?) and rubbishing the Socialist Worker - these are things I do in my spare time anyway, and would have continued doing without the war going on! Acting on what you believe is very hard. I have a sticker on my mobile ('No blood for oil') and I donated 2 pounds to the Socialist Worker anyway on the grounds that it's still better than the turncoats at the Guraniad. I seriously lack substance.
It's so easy to be anti-establishment these days - is it saying something about the state of the establishment or that everyone thinks being 'anti' is the cool thing to be? Even the London Underground is on the act. Here's a poem I found on the Underground:
-Sing a song of Esso-
(to be sung to the tune of 'Sing a song of sixpence')
Sing a song of Esso
a packet full of lies
and oily greasy dollars
to help the climate fry
when the wallet opened
George Bush began to sing
"the planet may be burning
but I don't see a thing".
The boss is in the counting house
counting out his money
Bush is in the White House
the weather's going funny
so let us now suggest to you
that when you see their logo
do something for our planet
and don't go buying Esso.
