In orbit...again...soon
The Thin Landlady and I were watching the workmen replace the airconditioners in my flat this weekend. TL asked me how I'd been since I saw her last.
"You look tired,"
She said.
"Well, I've been to Tokyo, Seoul and London during the month since I saw you last,"
I said. She gasped, then nodded and said,
"I used to be in a job that required me to travel that much, and I didn't like it. So I moved to this company where I don't have to travel."
Cleverclogs. Obviously she's found the right cushy job. What am I doing wrong, I wondered. Then I remembered my job and the wonder ceased to exist.
I'm leading the life of a nomad when I'm not chained to my desk. It is 10.30pm as I fight with a nasty document that is a scraggly mess as a result of having had too many people trying to draft it. This week I will be flying to Seoul, Taipei (stopover) and back to Hong Kong. In July I am guaranteed to make at least two flights, between Europe and Hong Kong. If I carry on at this rate, I will need a lead blanket to shield me from the radiation I will be absorbing as I fly in the stratosphere. I'm turning into a satellite - all satellites dream of the day they come blazing down to Earth to lie lamely on the surface, finally rooted in one place.
I think I need a (fourth cup of) tea.
