What men really want

My friend I. is typical of the single blokes that I get to know in Hong Kong. He works for an investment bank, is very committed to ensuring he has a plan for his future and he works as much as anyone could possibly do with 24 hours in a day. He is tall, good-looking and quite a nice guy. Ask him what type of girl he wants to meet with and, while he will not say anything with reference to specific female physical attributes (the guy is not dumb, he would not voluntarily say anything like that in front of a überfeminist such as myself), he is certain of one thing.
"She can't be a freeloader."
He is adamant that the person he marries has to earn her keep.

D., another single male acquaintance, has a similar idea.
"So when you marry I suppose you'd want someone who will be providing you with free sex, food and other maid services?" I joked. D. shook his head.
"If I wanted just that, I should have married the first willing Filipina maid I came across. No, I want someone who is my equal," he said. Now, finding a 5'6" tall, ex-Marine woman working in the IT sector is quite a challenge, I'm sure.

A lot of men nowadays want to go out with someone who will be at the very least able to pay for herself. But I suspect some of them secretly have fantasies of being the human equivalent of a male Zeus bug (see the article below) in the same way some women want to find a sugar daddy. Perhaps this is all part of the evolutionary process: men start off seeing themselves as the main breadwinner, then they want to be equal, and perhaps in the future it is meant to be that women will be the main breadwinner? I hear it is already the case in many, many families.

It's not like it's a terrible thing, it's rather amusing to note. My former colleague M. has a wife who earns more than him so rumour has it that he will be staying at home to look after their newborn baby. This is the 21st century man. Is this what men want?
