Foggy or misty?
When I was a child walking to school with my mother in the suburbs of London, we sometimes experienced the thick fog that London is so famous for - not quite like the nineteenth century's ominous yellow haze but thick enough to ensure you had to count the numbers of the neighbouring houses to know where you were going.
For the past couple of days and nights it has been foggy around here at various intervals, then this morning I woke up to see that the heavens had become milky white and the faraway trees had vanished into the all-enveloping folds of a fog.
Well, I say
fog. M. has been teasing me saying that it really is a
mist.
"What do
you think is a mist?" I asked.
"It's wetter than a fog," he said.
"So is this a mist or a fog?" I asked.
"It's foggy
and misty," he said. But in my mind the two cannot exist at the same time.
So I Googled it:
FOG - Fog exists if the atmospheric visibility near the Earth's surface is reduced to 1 kilometer or less. Fog can be composed of water droplets, ice crystals or smoke particles. Fogs composed primarily of water droplets are classified according to the process that causes the air to cool to saturation. Common types of this type of fog include: radiation fog; upslope fog; advection fog; evaporation fog; ice fog; and frontal fog.
MIST - (1) A mass of fine droplets of water in the atmosphere near or in contact with the earth; liquid particles measuring 40 to 500 microns, formed by condensation of vapour. By comparison, fog particles are smaller than 40 microns. (2) Water vapour condensed on and clouding the appearance of a surface.
By my reckoning today is a
foggy day. But as for whether it was misty last night or not, I haven't got the foggiest.
** I am subjected to another meme, this time donated to me by
Kinga. I didn't think you would do this to me, Kinga! ARRRGHHH!!! PEOPLE PLEASE LET'S NOT DO MEMES TO OURSELVES...
1. What is the total size of mp3’s on your computer? HA. I don't have
any.
2. What was the last cd that you bought? It's been a while. I can't remember. And I don't have my stuff from Hong Kong yet anyway so I can't tell you.
3. What was the last song (literally!) you have heard before you read this? My neighbour's radio playing a song I don't recognise. Whoever it is, can you please turn down the volume?!
4. Write down 4 songs you listen to a lot or songs that mean a lot to you. Avril Lavigne's 'Happy Ending', this random Korean song M. recorded for me that I don't know the title of, The Backstreet Boys' 'I want it that way' for the memories of singing it with a friend of mine, a random Korean nursery rhyme Liddle Sis used to sing when she was four or five - had something to do with apples and chili peppers.
5. Who do you want to pass this one on to? No one. The buck stops here.
